🏫 Programs (19)
Dalhousie University, School of Social Work (Faculty of Health)
Strong fit Dal BA removes conversion uncertainty, no prerequisites, five-factor evaluation favors experience and writing. ⚠️ Two critical questions before applying: (1) Does last-60-credit GPA meet 3.0/4.3? (2) Does SpaceCat's BA qualify as a "related field"? See [degree field restrictions](#prior-degree-requirement) for details. Year 1 in Halifax, Year 2 available by distance.
King's University College, School of Social Work (affiliated with Western University; degree granted by Western University)
Strong fit 50/50 academic/non-academic formula, shelter work explicitly valued, CASPer advantage, non-academic references ideal for her profile. If last-20-course GPA >= 70%, she should be competitive. Priority application.
University of Calgary, Faculty of Social Work
Strong fit ⚠️ PRIMARILY ONLINE DELIVERY — unlike most programs on this list, this is delivered mostly online with only 3 mandatory on-campus residencies (no daily cohort interaction, more self-directed). This may or may not suit SpaceCat's learning style. Academically: 3.0 GPA minimum achievable, below-3.0 pathway exists, holistic review favors experience. 3-year timeline and confirming out-of-province practicums are the main trade-offs.
Wilfrid Laurier University, Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Work
Strong fit Smallest GPA window (10 half-courses), B minimum, explicit GPA explanation prompt, experience-heavy, online asynchronous, 3 intakes/year. High-priority application.
Carleton University, School of Social Work (Faculty of Public and Global Affairs)
Moderate fit Holistic 3-way evaluation (GPA/statement/experience, ~1/3 each) lets strong experience compensate for weaker GPA, but must clear B- floor. 14% acceptance rate (two-year program).
University of British Columbia (Vancouver campus)
Moderate fit Holistic review with explicit sub-80% accommodation is encouraging. Main barriers: prereqs (stats + research methods), 3 references, 2 years full-time in Kelowna. Year 2 distance practicum in Toronto possible.
University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC)
Moderate fit Multiple written components and 2-yr experience requirement favor SpaceCat. Main barriers: "related field" degree requirement, 2 academic references needed, 3.0 GPA on last 60 credits. Based in Prince George, BC.
University of Toronto
Moderate fit Small GPA window (final year senior courses) combined with the most substantial essay component of any MSW (5 × 400 words on marginalized populations). SpaceCat's shelter work maps directly to every prompt. 3 professional references accepted. Competitive average is high (~3.9+) but the essays provide a real offset pathway.
University of Victoria (UVic)
Moderate fit 3,000-hr gate SpaceCat clears; lower GPA minimum (B) with experience exceptions. Main concerns: biennial intake (Nov 30, 2026 deadline or wait until 2029), total 3-5 year duration. Year 1 in Victoria, then Year 2+ by distance from Ontario is a major advantage.
University of Windsor, School of Social Work (Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences)
Moderate fit Working Professionals track: online weekend delivery, holistic review, strong experience valuation, no CASPer/interview. Main concerns: (1) 73% GPA floor and GPA is locked to qualifying degree (post-degree upgrading likely doesn't count), (2) confirming 4-year honours degree, (3) 13-week practicum leave.
University of the Fraser Valley (UFV)
Moderate fit 3,000-hr requirement (volunteer accepted) favors SpaceCat. Main barriers: cumulative GPA window, biennial intake (apply by Dec 1, 2026 or wait until 2029), "related field" degree requirement, 2 prereqs. Based in Abbotsford, BC.
Laurentian University, School of Social Work
Reach Non-BSW pathway is one of Canada's most demanding: 80%+ GPA, 5 years professional experience, AND a qualifying year. Only pursue if GPA is at/above 80% and experience requirement is met.
McGill University, School of Social Work
Reach Cumulative GPA 3.2 hard floor, full cumulative window nearly impossible to shift, ~$32,400 OOP tuition, French placement logistics. Prestige is strong but barriers are significant.
University of Manitoba, Faculty of Social Work
Reach ~7-10% acceptance rate for Foundation stream (one of Canada's most selective MSW programs). In-person only in Winnipeg. Brief statement limits experiential compensation. Educational Equity pathway is the strongest mitigating factor.
York University, School of Social Work, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies (LAPS)
Reach Competitive avg A, ~5-10% acceptance rate for Two-Year (~20 seats). Holistic review offers some hope but no CASPer or interview to leverage.
Lakehead University, School of Social Work (Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences)
Not viable BSW/HBSW required; no non-BSW entry stream. HBSW pathway adds 3+ years. Direct-entry MSW programs elsewhere are far more efficient.
McMaster University
Not viable BA from Dalhousie, not a BSW. Both streams require a BSW. No foundation year or alternative pathway. Would need a BSW first (2+ years). ([details](#prior-degree-requirement))
Memorial University of Newfoundland, School of Social Work
Not viable BSW required plus 2 years post-BSW professional experience. No non-BSW entry stream, no foundation year. Minimum 4-year pathway before MSW studies could begin.
University of Ottawa (Universite d'Ottawa), Faculty of Social Sciences, School of Social Work (Ecole de service social)
Not viable Entire program delivered in French. All courses, practica, thesis supervision, and seminars in French. Requires OLBI French proficiency at "Low Advanced" (F7). Would need 1-2+ years of intensive French study before applying.
