Master of Social Work (MSW) — University of Manitoba

SpaceCat Fit Notes

  1. CASPer: Not used. No interview. Details

  2. GPA window & upgrading strategy: Last 60 credit hours (~2 years). Post-degree courses ARE included. 10 strong new courses replace half the window. Educational Equity pathway allows GPA as low as 2.5. Details

  3. Experiential / written advantage: Area of Specialization Statement is brief and explicitly excludes personal life experiences. Work history + 2 references must carry the experiential case. Details

  4. Out-of-province: Ontario resident. No Manitoba residency preference for MSW. No tuition differential. In-person in Winnipeg. Details

  5. Overall assessment: Reach — ~7-10% acceptance rate for Foundation stream (one of Canada’s most selective MSW programs). In-person only in Winnipeg. Brief statement limits experiential compensation. Educational Equity pathway is the strongest mitigating factor.

“With a minimum GPA of 3.0 (B) in the last 60 credit hours of university study.”

“If courses have been taken subsequent to the degree as a Special Student and/or Occasional Student and/or in a subsequent degree or a Pre-Master program, they will be calculated into the Grade Point Average as part of the last 60 credit hours.”

“Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Admission into the MSW programs are highly competitive.”

“Applicants who self-identify as members of one or more of the Educational Equity priority groups and who possess a GPA between 2.5 and 2.99 will be reviewed for special consideration.”

Supplementary Requirements

Written / Personal Components

Component Length Prompt / Description
Area of Specialization Statement Not specified (brief) “What area do you wish to focus on in your studies?” Applicants should focus on what they want to learn if admitted — not personal life experiences. This statement is used to match students with a faculty advisor. Source

SpaceCat note: The Area of Specialization statement is notably brief and explicitly says not to include personal life experiences. This is unusual compared to most MSW programs that invite lengthy personal narratives. SpaceCat should focus tightly on her academic/professional interest area (e.g., housing instability, trauma-informed practice, gender-based violence) and frame it as an intellectual pursuit rather than a personal story. The brevity and academic focus mean SpaceCat’s experiential strengths cannot be conveyed through this component — her work history and reference letters will need to do that heavy lifting.

How Applications Are Evaluated

The admissions page states that “admission into the MSW programs are highly competitive” and “meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.” No published formula or weighting system. The application components (transcripts, GPA, work history, references, area of specialization statement) are reviewed collectively by the admissions committee in March/April, with decisions following. Source

The Educational Equity Initiative ensures that applicants from priority groups receive additional consideration, including access at a lower GPA threshold (2.5-2.99).

Out-of-Province Considerations

Cost

Cost note for SpaceCat: At approximately $19,000-$22,000 in tuition over 2 years, UManitoba is one of the most affordable MSW programs in Canada. Combined with Winnipeg’s low cost of living, the financial picture is favourable — but the requirement to relocate from Ontario introduces moving costs and the loss of any Ontario-based income or housing arrangements.

Competitiveness

Competitiveness note: The 7-10% acceptance rate for the Foundation stream makes UManitoba one of the most selective MSW programs in Canada for non-BSW applicants — comparable to or more competitive than U of T. This is a critical factor for SpaceCat.

Alternative Stream: MSW Based in Indigenous Knowledges (MSW-IK)

The University of Manitoba also offers a distinct MSW program based in Indigenous Knowledges, focused on “developing social workers whose skills are rooted in Indigenous knowledges and worldviews.” This is a separate program with its own admission process and curriculum. SpaceCat should be aware of its existence but the standard MSW is the relevant program for her application. Source

Information Not Found

The following items could not be confirmed from public sources and should be verified directly with the program:

  1. Whether field placements can be completed outside Winnipeg/Manitoba. Given the in-person-only format, placements are presumably local, but this should be confirmed.
  2. Specific reference letter requirements — whether academic, professional, or a mix is preferred for non-BSW applicants.
  3. Detailed financial aid/funding packages available to MSW students, including teaching or research assistantships.
  4. Average GPA of admitted students in the Foundation stream — the competitive GPA is not published.
  5. Whether the 250-word Area of Specialization statement is the only written component or if additional personal/autobiographical materials are requested during the application.
  6. Incidental/ancillary fees beyond tuition — the tuition page lists the base rate but does not detail additional student fees for the MSW program.
  7. Criminal record check or health requirements for practicum placements.
  8. Specific Educational Equity priority group definitions and self-identification process — confirm the full list of eligible groups and how self-identification works in the application.
