Master of Social Work (MSW) — University of Toronto

⚠️ Program status: Active

SpaceCat Fit Notes

  1. CASPer: Not required. SpaceCat cannot leverage her high CASPer score here — U of T does not use CASPer.

  2. GPA window & upgrading strategy: GPA is calculated on the final year of senior-level courses only (~8–10 half-courses / ~30 credit hours). This is a narrow window, but it is unclear whether post-degree courses count. If post-degree courses ARE counted, taking 5–10 strong new senior-level courses could substantially shift or fully reset the window. If they are NOT counted, new courses would barely affect (or not affect) SpaceCat’s effective GPA. This needs to be verified with admissions directly (admissions.fsw@utoronto.ca) — it is the single most important question for this program. The minimum is mid-B (~73–76%), but admitted students typically have GPAs of 3.9+. The one GradCafe exception (3.30 GPA) had 8 years of experience.

  3. Experiential / written advantage: U of T has one of the most substantial personal statement components of any MSW program — 5 questions x 400 words = 2,000 words total. The prompts directly ask about experience with marginalized populations (Q2), accomplishments (Q3), and contemporary social problems (Q4), all of which SpaceCat’s shelter work experience addresses squarely. Experience is valued and recommended, and shelter work with marginalized populations is exactly what this program prizes. There is no interview, so the written application is the primary vehicle beyond GPA. If SpaceCat has been out of school 3+ years, all three references can come from work/volunteer settings — a strong advantage given her professional background.

  4. Out-of-province: Ontario resident. - None found. The program does not mention provincial quotas or residency restrictions for domestic applicants. (). - None for domestic students. University of Toronto charges the same domestic tuition regardless of province of residence. Ontario universities do not differentiate domestic tuitio

  5. Overall assessment: Reach — This is a reach school for SpaceCat given the GPA competitiveness (~17% acceptance rate, admitted GPAs typically 3.9+). However, the heavy emphasis on personal statement and experience means a very strong application package could compensate somewhat. SpaceCat should apply but should not rely on this as a likely admission. **Priority action: contact admissions.fsw@utoronto.ca to clarify whether post-degree courses count toward the GPA calculation.

Written / Personal Components

Five personal statement questions, each with a 400-word maximum. Submitted as PDF via SGS GradApp portal. (Source)

Component Word Limit Prompt / Description
Question 1 400 words “What experiences motivate you to (a) become a social worker; or (b) continue your social work education?”
Question 2 400 words “Describe your skills (e.g.: volunteer/work) that you believe are relevant to social work (with examples). In particular, please describe your experiences working with diverse and marginalized populations.”

Evaluation criteria for personal statement: Clarity and conciseness, analytical skills, relevant experience in social services, knowledge of critical social issues, suitability for professional practice, alignment between learning goals and program resources. The faculty encourages applicants to share diverse identities, lived experiences, and commitment to social equality. (Source)

How Applications Are Evaluated

The program states: “Each year the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work receives many more qualified applications than spaces available in the program. Having the minimum admission requirements does not in itself guarantee admission. The Faculty reserves the right to select the most qualified applicants.” (Source)

No explicit weighting is published. Based on available information, the evaluation appears to be holistic, considering: 1. GPA (senior-level final year) 2. Personal statement (5 questions, substantial component) 3. References (3 required) 4. CV / relevant experience 5. “Suitability for professional practice”

There is no CASPer, no interview, and no standardized test. The personal statement and experience appear to carry significant weight alongside GPA.

Decision timeline: Admission decisions communicated mid-February through mid-April. GradCafe data shows acceptances arriving late February to early March, with rejections sometimes coming earlier (January–February). (Source, Source)

Information Not Found

The following items could not be confirmed from public sources and should be verified directly with the program:

  1. Whether post-degree courses count toward the GPA calculation. This is the single most important question for SpaceCat. A GradCafe poster reported they do not count, but this needs official confirmation. Contact: admissions.fsw@utoronto.ca or (416) 978-6314.
  2. Exact domestic tuition for 2026–27 entry. The 2020–21 figure was ~$9,700/year; the 2025–26 SGS general graduate figure was ~$11,950 + $2,837 ancillary. Current MSW-specific figures should be confirmed via the FIFSW tuition page or the U of T Tuition Fee Lookup Tool.
  3. Whether online prerequisite courses are accepted. The program does not state a position on online vs. in-person prerequisites.
  4. Exact evaluation weighting. No published weighting formula (e.g., “GPA = 50%, personal statement = 30%”). The process appears holistic but specifics are unknown.
  5. Whether placements can be arranged outside the GTA. Not addressed in practicum documentation.
  6. Current CASWE accreditation expiry date. The most recent publicly documented accreditation was 2012–2020; the subsequent review outcome is not posted.
  7. Whether the 3-year time limit for the Two-Year Program allows for any leaves of absence.
