Master of Social Work (MSW) β€” Dalhousie University

SpaceCat Fit Notes

  1. CASPer: Not required. details

  2. GPA window & upgrading strategy: Last 60 credit hours. Minimum 3.0/4.3 (B). Dal transcript = no conversion ambiguity. 10 new courses replace half the window; ~20 fully reset it. No prerequisites required. details

“A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.3 scale) or an equivalent cumulative average of at least B in the last 60 undergraduate credit hours completed.”

  1. Experiential / written advantage: ~8-page Statement of Scholarly Interest across 4 questions β€” the most substantial written component of any MSW program reviewed. Q3 on social oppression/injustice plays directly to shelter work. Experience is one of five evaluation criteria. No interview. Dal alumna advantage. details

“Preference is given to applicants with two years of social work related experience (paid or volunteer).”

  1. Out-of-province: Ontario resident β€” no NS preference for MSW (unlike BSW). No tuition differential. Details.

  2. Overall assessment: Strong fit β€” Dal BA removes conversion uncertainty, no prerequisites, five-factor evaluation favors experience and writing. ⚠️ Two critical questions before applying: (1) Does last-60-credit GPA meet 3.0/4.3? (2) Does SpaceCat’s BA qualify as a “related field”? See degree field restrictions for details. Year 1 in Halifax, Year 2 available by distance.

Quick Facts

Admission Requirements

GPA

Prerequisites

No specific prerequisite courses are listed for MSW admission. The program does not require research methods, statistics, or any specific undergraduate course. The only academic requirement is the completed degree and GPA minimum. Source

Prior Degree Requirement

“A completed four year undergraduate university degree (120 credit hours) in a related field is required.”

What other Canadian MSW programs consider “related”: Psychology, sociology, political science, gender/women’s studies, criminal justice, human services, anthropology, and similar social science disciplines are generally accepted. Programs like York MSW explicitly list “social sciences, sociology, political science, public policy, gender studies” as examples.

SpaceCat’s risk: If her BA major is in humanities, arts, or a non-social-science field, it may not be automatically considered “related.” However: - Her shelter work experience strongly demonstrates connection to social work practice - Dal’s 8-page Statement of Scholarly Interest could be used to argue the connection - Other MSW programs (Carleton, Calgary, King’s/Western) explicitly accept “any 4-year degree” without the “related field” restriction

Action required: Contact Dal School of Social Work (902-494-3760) to confirm whether SpaceCat’s specific BA major qualifies as “a related field.” If not, programs without this restriction (Carleton, Calgary, King’s/Western, Laurier) remain Strong fit alternatives.

CASPer

Not required. SpaceCat cannot leverage her high CASPer score here.

Supplementary Requirements

Written / Personal Components

Component Length Prompt / Description
Statement of Scholarly Interest β€” Question 1 ~8 pages total (double-spaced) across all 4 questions Identify and discuss an area of interest relevant to social work which you would like to explore further through your studies at Dalhousie.
Statement of Scholarly Interest β€” Question 2 (included in 8-page total) Link your area of interest to the social work program offered at Dalhousie, and explain how Dalhousie will allow you to learn more about this area of interest.
Statement of Scholarly Interest β€” Question 3 (included in 8-page total) Discuss the relationship of social oppression and social injustice to your research area of interest.
Statement of Scholarly Interest β€” Question 4 (included in 8-page total) How do you expect to learn and achieve your goals within the context of the MSW program at Dalhousie University? Describe, discuss and analyze the knowledge, skills and current debates which you view as important to your chosen focus of study.

An interactive PDF cover sheet is also required. This is described as “not intended to be a proposal for research” but rather “an initial proposal that accepted students can further develop.” Applicants from designated groups under the Affirmative Action Policy may self-identify on the cover sheet.

How Applications Are Evaluated

The MSW Admissions Committee evaluates candidates on five criteria:

  1. Academic performance (last 60 undergraduate credit hours)
  2. Social work related experience
  3. Strength of Statement of Scholarly Interest (written presentation and depth of knowledge)
  4. Appropriateness of educational/professional goals to the School’s program
  5. Strength of references

No published weighting or formula. The program states that “the number of places offered each year to graduate studies is limited” and “possession of admission requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission.” This is a holistic review with multiple criteria.

Applicants are notified of the Admissions Committee’s final recommendation in mid-February. Acceptances are conditional on approval of the Dean of Graduate Studies followed by official notification from the University Registrar.

Information Not Found

The following items could not be confirmed from public sources and should be verified directly with the program:

  1. Competitive GPA of admitted students β€” only the minimum (3.0/4.3 = B) is published. No data on average admitted GPA.
  2. Exact cohort size for the non-BSW campus stream specifically β€” total program accepts ~85 across all streams, but the breakdown by entry point is not published.
  3. Whether SpaceCat’s specific Dalhousie BA major is considered “a related field” β€” most social science and humanities degrees would qualify, but this should be confirmed.
  4. Detailed financial aid/funding packages for MSW students β€” not publicly detailed beyond general statements about competitive funding.
  5. Criminal record check / immunization requirements for practicum β€” likely required but not specified on the admissions pages (would be in the MSW Field Manual).
  6. Whether the November 15 deadline applies to the 2026 cycle specifically β€” the website states this is the annual deadline, but confirm for the specific year.
  7. OSAP eligibility for Ontario residents studying at Dalhousie β€” SpaceCat should confirm out-of-province OSAP coverage.
