Nursing Advanced Entry Program (BScN) — Toronto Metropolitan University

SpaceCat Fit Notes

Quick Facts

Important: New Program

This is a new program launching Fall 2026. The Fall 2026 cohort will be the first class to enter the Nursing Advanced Entry Program. There are no graduates, no alumni reviews specific to NAEP, and no historical admission data. Student reviews below relate to the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing’s existing collaborative program, not NAEP specifically. Source

Admission Requirements

GPA

“A minimum overall average of B (75% or 3.0 on a 4.0 GPA scale) in your top 20 semestered courses or 10 full-year courses is required.” Source

Prerequisites

All prerequisites must be completed at the university level, within the last 5 years of the applicant’s start date in the program, and by June 30 of the admission year. Each requires a minimum grade of C- (60%).

Whether prerequisites can be taken online: Not explicitly stated on TMU’s website. The program requires university-level courses from “an accredited university (or equivalent)” but does not specify restrictions on delivery mode. Online courses from accredited universities (e.g., Athabasca) would likely be accepted, but applicants should confirm with TMU admissions directly.

Subject Area Credits Required TMU Course Equivalents Notes
Biology 1.0 (2 half-courses) BLG 143 General biology at the university level
Microbiology 1.0 (2 half-courses) BLG 131 or BLG 151 Must be university-level microbiology
Psychology 1.0 (2 half-courses) PSY 102 Introductory psychology
Human Physiology / Anatomy 2.0 (4 half-courses) BLG 101, BLG 111, PLN 103, PLN 203 Must cover human anatomy and human physiology
Statistics 1.0 (2 half-courses) MTH 380 University-level statistics
Social Sciences / Humanities 2.0 (4 half-courses) Liberal studies, open electives Can be a combination of social sciences and/or humanities

Total prerequisite credits: 8.0 TMU credits (16 half-courses)

Note on prerequisite credit values: TMU uses a credit system where 1.0 credit = 2 semester-long courses (or 1 full-year course). The prerequisite listing shows 1.0 credits for Biology, 1.0 for Microbiology, etc. This means you need TWO semester-long courses in each subject area, except Human Physiology/Anatomy which requires FOUR semester-long courses (2.0 credits). Confirm with TMU whether a single full-year course satisfies a 1.0 credit prerequisite.

Prior Degree Requirement

“Eligible candidates must have completed all of the prerequisites for entry into the program, as well as approximately 2 years of academic study equivalent to 20 TMU credits (approximately 20 semestered courses or 10 full-year courses) at an accredited university (or equivalent).” Source

How Applications Are Evaluated

Grades-only. This is one of the simplest application processes among Ontario accelerated nursing programs:

“Admission decisions for Grades-Only programs are based on academic performance.” Source

There are no supplementary components (no CASPer, no interview, no essays, no references). Admission is based entirely on: 1. Meeting the prerequisite course requirements (minimum C- / 60% in each) 2. Overall GPA in top 20 semestered courses (minimum B / 75% / 3.0) 3. Competitive ranking among applicants

“TMU receives more applications than spaces available. Possession of the minimum requirements, averages and/or grades does not guarantee admission.” Source

Out-of-Province Considerations

Cost

Note: Tuition figures above are from the program listing page and the undergraduate tuition schedule. The NAEP-specific tuition may differ slightly from the collaborative program rates since it is a new program. The ranges ($7,387–$7,860 Ontario) appear to be per-year figures. Source, Source

Curriculum

The program uses a semester-based structure with NAE-coded courses:

Semester Courses
Semester 1 NAE 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106
Semester 2 NAE 201, 202, 203, 204, 205
Semester 3 NAE 301, 302, 303, 304
Semester 4 NAE 401, 402, 403, 404
Semester 5 NAE 501 (Transition to Practice)

Year 1 focuses on “professional socialization and the integration of foundational nursing knowledge.” Year 2 emphasizes “specialized knowledge and the advancement of leadership capacity.”

Academic standing: Minimum grade of C in all theory and practice courses. A grade of C- or below triggers probationary status.

Student Reviews (Collaborative Program — NOT NAEP-specific)

Since NAEP has no graduates yet, the following reviews relate to TMU’s existing collaborative nursing program:

Positive: - Strong clinical preparation: “As fourth-year students, they are already working on their own in clinical and working independently under their preceptor.” - Welcoming community: “Everyone at TMU is so open and accepting, it’s such an easy place to make friends.” - 300+ placement partners across the GTA provide diverse clinical experiences.

Negative (from The Eyeopener, TMU student newspaper, March 2021): - “Support is confusing to access because of program-wide miscommunication.” - “Many students started their placements weeks late due to widespread miscommunication and a lack of transparency about Ryerson’s shortage of placements.” - “Inconsistencies, unfair grading schemes and unclear syllabi” were cited as concerns. - Some students described the program as very stressful, particularly in years 2-3.

Key Considerations

  1. Brand-new program: No track record, no alumni outcomes, no historical admission data. This is both a risk (untested) and a potential opportunity (less established competition patterns, potentially less competitive in the first year).
  2. Grades-only admission: Unlike U of T (essays), McMaster (CASPer + MMI), Queen’s (supplementary), and Western (supplementary + CASPer), TMU’s NAEP is purely GPA-based. This simplifies the application but means GPA is the sole differentiator.
  3. No completed degree required: Only 20 credits (2 years) of university study needed — a completed bachelor’s degree is not required. This is less restrictive than some other programs.
  4. Heavy prerequisite load: 8.0 credits (16 half-courses) of prerequisites is more than most comparable programs.
  5. 5-year recency requirement: Both the 20 credits and prerequisites must be within 5 years of program start. This could be an issue for applicants who completed their undergrad more than 5 years ago.
  6. No study permit holders: Only Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible.
  7. Out-of-province tuition differential: TMU charges ~$1,500–1,700/year more for out-of-province domestic students, unlike U of T which charges the same rate.
