Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) – 4-Year – St. Francis Xavier University

SpaceCat Fit Notes

  1. CASPer: No longer required (as of ~2025). CASPer was previously used but has been dropped. No CASPer advantage for SpaceCat. details
  2. GPA window & upgrading strategy: Applicants assessed on 5 Grade 12 (University/Academic level) prerequisite courses with a minimum 65% average. For transfer students, both post-secondary and high school transcripts are required. The evaluation appears to focus on HS prerequisites even for university applicants. No post-secondary GPA window identified. details
  3. Experiential / written advantage: None identified. details
  4. Out-of-province: No Nova Scotia residency restriction found. Transfer students can receive up to 60 credits. details
  5. Overall assessment: Reach — StFX evaluates nursing applicants on 5 Grade 12 course prerequisites (English, Math, Chemistry, Biology, + one more), minimum 65%. SpaceCat’s strong HS marks could be directly useful here IF those 5 specific courses are strong. However: CASPer has been dropped (eliminating her CASPer advantage), competitive averages are likely well above 65%, and there’s no published post-secondary GPA pathway that would allow a reset. Transfer students submit both HS and post-secondary transcripts, but the HS courses appear to drive the ranking. This is a small program at a small university in Antigonish, NS.

The Key Question: BA Holder with Strong HS Marks

StFX evaluates nursing applicants on 5 Grade 12 prerequisites. SpaceCat’s strong HS marks are directly relevant IF her English, Math, Bio, Chem, and one additional course are strong. Both HS and post-secondary transcripts are required for transfer students, but the published ranking criterion is the 5 HS courses.

Key unknowns: - Whether post-secondary grades are used at all in nursing admission ranking (or only for transfer credit) - Whether university-level equivalents of HS courses can substitute - How competitive the program actually is (likely quite competitive given small cohort)

Without CASPer, SpaceCat has no non-academic advantage. Her BA GPA would be visible but may not factor into the ranking. Her strong HS marks are the main potential asset here.
