Bachelor of Science, Nursing (BScN) – Cape Breton University

SpaceCat Fit Notes

  1. CASPer: NO LONGER REQUIRED. “The CASPer test will no longer be required for those applying to the Bachelor of Science Nursing program, beginning with admission for the Spring 2026 intake.” This removes one of SpaceCat’s potential advantages. details
  2. GPA window & upgrading strategy: Direct entry (3-year program) based on Grade 12 marks: 70% minimum per course in five Grade 12 courses. Advanced Standing (2-year) requires 30 university credits with 60% minimum per course and 65% overall, including 5 specific prereqs (Physiology, Anatomy, English, Microbiology, Statistics). details
  3. Experiential / written advantage: None – grades-based. details
  4. Out-of-province: “Primarily serves permanent residents of Nova Scotia” with “limited” seats for other provinces. Out-of-province tuition: ~$48,236 for 3-year Direct Entry (significantly higher than NS residents). details
  5. Overall assessment: Reach – THE KEY QUESTION: CBU has two pathways. (a) Direct Entry: Grade 12 marks primary (70% average in five courses). SpaceCat’s strong HS marks could work here, but there is no published policy on how a BA holder is classified for the direct entry stream. (b) Advanced Standing: university credits with 60% minimum per course and 65% overall across 30 credits. The 60% per-course minimum and 65% overall are low thresholds, but SpaceCat would need specific science prereqs (Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Statistics) she may not have from her BA. The program “primarily serves permanent residents of Nova Scotia” with limited OOP seats. Out-of-province tuition is ~$48K for 3 years (~$16K/year), significantly higher than NS residents. No CASPer means no non-academic offset. The combination of NS priority, higher OOP tuition, and no CASPer makes this a reach despite reasonable academic thresholds.

“The program primarily serves permanent residents of Nova Scotia” with “limited” seats for other Canadian provinces.

Quick Facts

Admission Requirements

GPA

Direct Entry (3-year): - Minimum GPA: 70% average in each of five required Grade 12 courses - Courses: English 12, Math 12, and 2 Science 12 courses (Biology & Chemistry recommended), plus 1 additional Grade 12 academic course

Advanced Standing (2-year): - Minimum GPA: 60% minimum in each of 10 courses (30 university credits); 65% overall average - Required courses: Physiology, Human Anatomy, English, Microbiology, and Statistics (5 prereqs) + 15 additional university-level credits

15 additional university credits Required 60% each Any university level

CASPer

No longer required as of Spring 2026 intake.

“The CASPer test will no longer be required for those applying to the Bachelor of Science Nursing program, beginning with admission for the Spring 2026 intake.”

How Applications Are Evaluated

The Key Question: BA Holder with Strong HS Marks

Two possible paths: 1. Direct Entry: If CBU allows a BA holder to apply to the 3-year Direct Entry using Grade 12 marks, SpaceCat’s strong HS marks (70% threshold is very achievable) would be primary. But this is a 3-year commitment and SpaceCat would need to confirm she is eligible for this stream with a completed BA. 2. Advanced Standing: Requires 30 university credits with specific science prereqs SpaceCat likely doesn’t have (Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Statistics). She would need to complete these first. The 60%/65% thresholds are low.

Must confirm with CBU whether a BA holder can enter the Direct Entry stream based on Grade 12 marks.

Out-of-Province Considerations

“Each year a limited number of seats are also available for well qualified residents of other Canadian provinces.”
